What You Should Know About Repairing Garage Doors

Fixing malfunctioning garage doors is usually a job for professionals. However, some of the repairs can be done by the homeowners too. There are usually two parts of the door that may need a repair – the opener and the door itself. Both can be repaired with patience, enough time, and of course, effort. If you want to do the garage door repair on your own, don’t forget about all the safety precautions that have to be taken and work only when there is plenty of daylight.

In order to determine the location and source of the problem, you have to do some testing. If the door can be opened manually but it’s really hard to do that and it’s making noise, the problem is probably with the door. But in case it’s opening fine but the opener is the part that’s not functioning properly, then the issue is with it.

As you know, garage doors are rolling along metal tracks, which are attached to the walls of the garage and the first step you need to take when doing repairs is to inspect them. The mounting brackets that secure the tracks to the wall have to be tightened because they usually get loose over time. If that’s the case, you should close the door to see if there are any dents in the tracks, breaks, or marks. If there is an issue, you have to remove the section of the metal tracks and make it flat again with the help of a hammer.

When done with the previous steps, you should use a carpenter’s level to make sure that the tracks are aligned. The horizontal tracks need to have a downward slant and the vertical ones should be straight. Check up the alignment of the tracks to make sure they are correct and parallel to one another. In addition to that, make sure the rollers are clean and lubricated so they can run smoothly.
